The Living Desert Alliance is excited to launch our first‑ever Speaker Series, a new community forum created to educate, inspire, and bring neighbors together around the issues shaping the future of the Sonoran Desert. This series welcomes anyone interested in learning more about our region, meeting the people doing meaningful work, and exploring ways to get involved at a level that fits their interests and capacity.
Each session will feature voices from across our community—sustainability professionals, nonprofit leaders, outreach coordinators, and passionate residents—working on topics such as transportation, land development, food waste reduction, water conservation, and more. Their insights help attendees discover new ideas, build connections, and take informed action in their own neighborhoods if they desire to do so.
Our June 10 event features guest speaker Nick Maya, Program Manager at the Coalition for Sonoran Desert Protection. Nick specializes in regional conservation policy, land‑use planning, and wildlife connectivity across the Sonoran Desert. His background includes leading collaborative public engagement at the University of Montana’s Center for Natural Resources and Environmental Policy, working with federal and state agencies, tribes, private landowners, and nonprofits on land and recreation planning. He holds degrees from New York University and the University of Montana, along with a graduate certificate in Natural Resources Conflict Resolution. Outside of work, Nick enjoys fly‑fishing, trap shooting, curating playlists, and exploring the outdoors with his partner and dog.
Nick will discuss the Coalition’s conservation efforts, the proposed Interstate I‑11, its history and current status and how existing roadways and future development—including I‑11—affect wildlife health, habitat connectivity, and long‑term ecological resilience.
We hope you’ll join us for this important and energizing evening. Your presence strengthens our mission to Keep our Desert and Community Livable and Thriving by building a more informed, connected, and resilient region for all who call the Sonoran Desert home.
